The Light of Knowledge

Session One
July - 2009
676 Mobile Devices:
Introduction:
Hello my name is Helen J. Moore and I am taking this class with the desire to learn the art of new technology and mobile devices. This knowledge will help my students strive toward a higher level of learning.
I was born in a small town in the south named Muskogee, Oklahoma, I am the 9th child from a family of ten(10), five (5) boys and five(5) girls. We were brought up in a loving and caring home where everyone had a job to complete to keep the house in order. Later in life I married my wonderful husband, Calvin Moore, we have one wonderful daughter named Toie, as a family we strive to give our daughter a good education from grade school through college. Now, I am attending college to earn my degree in Special Education. Education has changed tremendously since my early years. I am coming out of the ice age of learning to the new and fast way which is the light of knowledge in technology and education. My profession for the last twenty-three years has been in Early Childhood and Special Education. My students range in ages three through five. I am definitely not a technology student or person but I am trying to become more knowledgeable with mobile devices. Learning this new form of technology will help me teach in the classroom and also in my personal life.
As far as technology. I have learned to text and take pictures with my mobile device known as the cellular phone . I have also learned to transfer pictures from my cellular phone to my email address, thanks to my Sister! My beautiful daughter gave me my first I-pod and she also downloaded old school songs from the past for my enjoyment, no Beyonce' music.
My Experiences with Mobile Devices:
My first experience with mobile devices was at my place of employment. Every staff member had to attend a technology workshop in which you were trained on how to use a computer. The mobile device we were trained on were the Apple ll and Apple lle computers. The interface software was created for Special Needs Students. When I read Dr. Newberry's history on leaving the micro computers era and going into the computer age I could really relate because at my work site we still have some Apple ll and Apple lle computers. However, we use the newest computers for mobile devices and teaching in the classroom. Learning the history of Apple computers and other technology from Dr. Newberry was just remarkable. I was not just interested in going to a technology workshop for a week but if became a great learning experience for me. Seeing and watching how technology mobile devices can teach a student with special needs was very enlightening. Since that experience I am now going into a brighter and great future by using the Blog site and taking this new experience into the classroom.
Why We Don't Seem Excited about Mobile Technology:
Learning about mobile technology was a new and different area of learning when the micro computers were invented. People saw a new and fast way of getting information on things of interest, work, school, business and personal use.
As time progressed, people began to re-think about the time it took to learn all the devices that goes into new mobile technology. Unfortunately, time is the one thing we can never have enough of. Today's families, businesses, an some schools don't want to exert anymore time or money learning new technology. So they continue to utilize the old ways which is also the slow way to doing things. For example, some teachers prefer to use stamp patterns and printouts form lesson plan or activity books, than take the time to teach a student to use a mobile device.

  1. Hi Helen, Sherrie Coleman and I would like to let you know that you are open too new and fresh way of thinking and learning. After working at a school site for years and the principal reports that everyone will atten a workshop to learn new technology can sometime be hard to except. Just keep on learning. Then you can keep on teaching.

  2. What a challenge to work with such young children. I prefer older ones who can tell me they don't feel good before it's too late.
I left several web sites on my blog that might be a starting point for you. The devices all have text to speech and a multitude of programs that can assist special needs children. My blog is http://goveabs676blog.wordpress.com. Go take a look at some of the mobile devices.
